Sea To Summit

Ultra Sil® Review

One item I don't forget to take along for most outdoor related adventure trip is a dry sack or three. This goes double if I take any sort of electronics which I usually do - a phone and camera make it on most of the trips. I have used several brands and most do the job, but recently I purchased the Sea-To-Summit Ultrasil bags and so far the performance has been great.

If it is going to be a half day hike or even less, I learned the hard way to always bring rain / water protectioni for gear. I am much less interested in keeping clothing dry unless it is going to be a multi-day hike or camping trip so my main reason is to keep electornic gear dry. I have used compression dry sacks or specialized dry bags for kayaking / paddleboarding but some can be very expensive and more than I typically need. There cheaper methods of protection and some even use trash compacter liner but when it comes to confidence that the gear stays dry, nothing replaces a dry sack. I have had several types an each serve the purpose but when keeping things light, an ultralight dry sack can't be beat. They are light, waterproof and can easily be carried on a pocket.

Even if the day looks clear, the weather changes and quickly. I can't count the number of times a storm rolled in and I was caught without a way to cover gear so I would improvise. Either by stopping under cover or stopping the trip alltogether. I have turned around on bike rides, ruined phones and I just don't do this anymore.

There are several ultralight dry sacks out there and each are very close in specs but in this review, I will show the ones I use mostly. The Sea To Summit UltraSIl dry sacks. You could use the compression also, but I have found that I just don't use them much. The non- compression sacks serve the purpose and wiegh less. But if storage space is tight, I suppose the compressin sacks might worth the effort. But as I stated earlier, my main issue is to limit damage to electronic gear or anything that would be damaged by moisture.

This goes double when kayaking and / or paddle boarding. The Sea To Summit dry sacks have seen there share of kayak roles, SUP screwups where my gear ended up in the water. If you want to keep things dry always carry a dry sack like insurance.
